Any programming for new mouse?

My computer mouse is acting strange. We took it apart and shook out a lot of lint, but it still is jerky. I can't see anything on the ball, but it does not roll smoothly. If I buy a new mouse, can I just plug it in, or do I have to do some of that programming mumbo-jumbo?
